The Congress of Mexico City has made progress with a proposal presented by Deputy Brugada to ban bullfighting with violence. This decision comes at a time when judicial elections are approaching, which will take place for the first time in history and are generating disputes between the ruling party and the opposition.
Alberto Martínez Urincho, president of the Justice Commission of the local Congress, has denounced that Mauricio Tabe, PAN mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, is breaking regulations and violating established procedures by accusing a supposed interference by Deputy Brugada. According to Urincho, the ruling party is operating the judicial elections and aims to mobilize more than 20 million people, while Tabe would be using public resources to favor PAN candidacies.
The controversy intensified when Tabe announced the holding of public forums for the various candidates in the judicial elections to present their projects to the citizens. Urincho stated at a press conference that this action is "an interference" and indicated that he will present a point of agreement for the mayor to provide explanations.
Mauricio Tabe responded to the accusations, stating that the ruling party seeks to keep people in ignorance to favor their own interests. As the date of the judicial elections approaches, tensions between the ruling party and the opposition are escalating, as these elections will mark a milestone in the political history of the city.
In this context, Mayor Tabe has raised the importance of informed citizen participation in the electoral process and questioned why there is resistance to people being informed. The elections on June 1 will be crucial, especially considering that the reform of the Judiciary was pushed by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a measure that has been criticized by the opposition.
